CHARACTER DESIGN : ANIKA

Hi all,
a new post about Charac Design and the 3D character who resulting from it !

My wish was to create a new character from scratch in 3D, with commercial 3D softwares.
At this period, (about two years ago), I just finishing my missions in a compagny who worked whith proprietary softwares,
so I had to refresh my polymodeling and I had to be aware of the last update of 3dsmax.
I decided to create a girl in suit, the fisrt idea was to develop a space hunter, in a old school futurist world, like Albator, or Galaxy express 999, you know the faboulus manga create by the skillfull Leiji Matsumoto. Tetsurô Hoshino or Emeralda wear costume made in leather and "old fashion" gun.
So I began my first research in this way. Here is the fisrt sketches.

Then, I made a speedpaint to see if I can find color and shaders who suit her.

Not very happy with the result. Multiple things were not good enough. First the costume is to desaturate for me, too old fashion, then I didn't want to make dynamic hair for this model, and on this sheet Anika had semi-long hair who interact with her shoulders. If I don't want them to penetrate the shoulder I had to rig the hair, and it was not the goal of this work. I had a short deadline, so I decided to cut her hair to simplify the work and dynamism the gaze.
At this point, I choose to give up low-tech for hi-tech after reading a mook of Gundam. So I designed some mechanical parts inspired of the univers of Gundam, like the protec shoulder and the wires to link the arm to the wrist, the knees protections, the style of her boots...

The next step was to create the model sheet who will help me to do the modeling of the character in 3dsmax.
Now,with all these points clear, I can begin the 3D part. It took me about 2 days for the designs, 5 days for the modeling, 2 days for the set up with biped and the posing, 2 days for the unwrap with uvlayout and the surfacing and shader, and about 1 day for the lighting set up with mental ray.

voici un projet que j'ai fait il y a deux ans déja.
Donc en gros, l'idée était de faire un perso en 3D de A a Z avec des logiciels commerciaux, car je venais de finir mes missions dans un studio qui utilise uniquement des softs propriétaires.
J'ai donc débuté par des concepts, l'idée premiere était d'avoir quelque chose de low-tech, un peu a la Emeraldas dans Albator, ou dans Galaxy Express 999, avec des habits moulant en cuir old school et des vieux flingues.
Puis au fur et a mesure et après avoir lu un Mook Gundam, j'ai eu envie de quelque chose de plus saturé et plus hi-tech.
J'ai donc fait une v02 que j'ai fait évoluer jusqu'a obtenir le truc voulu, puis j'ai créé le model sheet pour pouvoir modéliser le personnage dans de bonnes conditions.
Modeling sous 3dsmax, Rendu sous mental ray, rapide set up avec Biped, depliage d'uv avec uvlayout.
Environ 10 jours de travail en 3D, plus 2 jours pour les design.
